A little bit about Norway

Ilona, Oslo

When I was visiting Norway in May, during a whole month, frankly speaking everything was shocking for me. Now it’s a normal thing, maybe because I am beginning to accustom to this life.

I am here for 3 months already and I have an impression that I am living in Norway for a very long time. But the main, I like everything here – people and nature, houses like in a fairy tales. People are smiling to you everywhere and meeting you with a smile. It’s so pleasant. Looking at them make my mood better.

While I was in my home town, in Riga, Latvia, I have been taking courses of Norwegian language and here of course my husband is helping me a lot and we are trying to speak Norwegian at home.

Frankly speaking, first 2-3 weeks it was difficult. I have been missing Riga, my family and friends and I have been missing communication in general. My husband, Roar, was working all day long and I was alone. I could not clean and cook during a whole day, but it was some fun any way. As we have washing machine and dish-cleaning machine, I was just cleaning an apartment and ironing. In our house the cook is my husband. And what a cook!!!! He loves to do it and does it perfectly. Sometimes I am making experiments as well on the kitchen, but it just sometimes.

I understood some things already: “our rise plov” was appreciated, soups as well, but stewed vegetables with garlic was not accepted, - strange.

I also don’t like a lot. For example I can’t understand how is possible to ear potato mesh with meat and cranberry jam. Or pea soup without a spoon, just dipping bread in it.

Everything here is making from packages – soups, sauces, even potato mesh  and stewed cabbage with caraway-seeds. First I have been shocked, but now it passed already.

I love nature in Norway!!! When in May we were in BODØ, on the North of Norway I could get stop admiring mountains. So beautiful!! And so far, in the mountains people are living as well.

There are a lot of tunnels here… When we have been driving to BØ, it took 4 hours on the car and I counted 8 tunnels. The longest is 7,3 km and it’s under the water.

I didn’t see here homeless people and alcoholics - so unusual. In Riga you can see them on every corner of the streets, sitting right on the ground and begging money.

Also I have seen only once police on the road.
