Religion in Kazakhstan Most Kazaks would say that to be a Kazak is to be a Muslim. In their eyes, religion and culture are tied together. However, because of the religious oppression of the Soviets, most Kazaks have never read the Qur'an or been to a mosque. Kazaks do not practice strict orthodox Islam like Arabs in the Middle East. Instead, Kazaks practice folk Islam. They mix superstition with Muslim practices. They fear the evil eye, which is the constant fear of hurt or destruction caused by other people's envy. They are wary of "djun" or spirits, which may cause physical or mental illness. Kazaks will visit the graves of Muslim saints to try to gain favours or blessings. Kazaks will buy and wear "tumars" which are charms that have a portion of Qur'anic scripture to try to protect themselves from evil. They will go to fortune-tellers and faith healers to try to divine the future or find a cure for an illness. They will also worship their ancestors and pray to them for advice.
Information about cities:
Information about cities:
Almaty, which means "Father of Apples" in Kazak, was originally founded in 1854. In 1929 it was made the capital of the Kazak Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) and remained the capital until July 1998 when the capital was moved to Astana. Almaty is situated at the foot of the Tien Shan Mountain range. It is also located along a major fault line which has caused damage due to earthquakes in 1887 and 1911. It is an ideal location for the processing of fruit from the fertile steppes around Almaty. Due to its location right next to the Tien Shan Mountains, it has become known as one of the most beautiful cities of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Today, Almaty is known as the commercial capital of Kazakstan. Since the official move of the capital to Astana in July, most businesses have remained in Almaty. One of the main reasons for this is that there is no international flights directly into Astana at this time. There is an international airport in Almaty, connected with more than 40 countries, all over the world. Planes of “Luftganza”, “KLM”, “Turkish Airlines”, “Austrian Airlines” lands here. Population: 1,147,000
Astana. The capital of Kazakhstan. This city was originally founded as a fortress in 1824 and named Akmolinsk. It was renamed Tselinograd (Russian for Virgin City) during the rule of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. Nazarbayev changed the name to Astana (literally "Capital") in 1998. Astana has been an important rail junction in Northern Kazakstan. It is located along the Ishim River and they produce agricultural machinery, chemicals and has meat-packing plants. Population: 322,400
Baykonur. The space centre. Baykonur has long been known as a place upon where the Soviets' heroes left this earth and became the first in space. It is from this launching point in central Kazakstan that Sputnik was launched in October 4, 1957. It is also from here that the first person to orbit the earth, Yuri Gagarin, started the "Space Race" with the United States. Baykonur has been the foundation of the Soviet space program. While there were two other launching pads, Plesetsk (Northern Russia) and Kasputin (Central Russia) , this was the primary launching point for manned missions. Currently, Russia has agreed to lease Baykonur from the independent country of Kazakstan for 20 years at $115 million in annual rent
